Route started 2004 - only recent feedback shown
"This was our third Onfoot holiday and we were not disappointed in the slightest. We very much enjoyed the company of Maggie and Andy Freeman who were on the same walk. We didn't actually walk together during the day but they added greatly to our enjoyment of the evenings and breakfasts. Also sharing a taxi to and from Skocjan caves was a bonus for both parties. We love the wonderful 'out of the way' and interesting places Onfoot uses for accommodation. We would highly recommend the farms, who were all so generous with food and wine." April '13
"We want to thank you all for an excellent holiday. All of the organisation was superb, the places we stayed and the people there were wonderful, and Slovenia is a great country.
"We liked the way the accommodation varied from tourist farms to boutique hotels, all of which were excellent. The walking instructions were clear and easily followed, and the GPS gave us added confidence. We will highly recommend this holiday to friends." April '13
A journalist writing for a Scottish newspaper went in September '12 - thiis is what she wrote on her return:
"Hi Simon, I wanted to let you know, we had a wonderful time in Slovenia. What you have created in terms of good local contacts and pertinent information conspires to create a fantastic holiday experience. The copy is more or less written and will be sent to editors next week when it has been tweaked a little. Margaret captured some stunning images which will greatly enhance the website and help to convey something about the true nature of the experience. She will send them on to you by disc in due course..... The article will be extremely positive and from the heart and I did not feel the need to include any criticism. It was a life affirming experience. Thank you for hosting us."
Fran Harris, the "Lady Adventurer" writes about her Slovenia holiday in May '12 - see http://bit.ly/OEVm7E. She really gets to the heart of what this particular route is about.
Other walkers report:
"Dear On Foot team and Gregor. Just a note to say thanks for organising the trip to Slovenia. We really enjoyed it and thought the packs and other guidance was just great. And many thanks in particular to Gregor who was so helpful and full of information to enhance our stay. I would also say as a first time visitor to Slovenia how impressed I was by the country. I will be back!" July '12
"Just want to let you know we had the best holiday walking in Slovenia - amazing! All went well, with good weather and all the organization was great." Sept '12
"We liked: the two cities of Ljubljana and Trieste; the very high standard of Tourist Farm accommodation and the excellent local food and wine; the friendliness of everyone in Slovenia and their obvious pride in their lovely country; the amazing Skocjan caves which are not to be missed (sorry Lippizaner horses, you can't compete); the amazing wild flowers, butterflies and insects. No real negatives (insect repellent a must in the hot weather..)" June '12
"In Trieste we sampled the delights of Trattoria alla Sorgente, ate lots of fish, practised our Italian and shared an Italian family birthday party...." June '12
"Hi there! We just finished our tour of Slovenia and had a fantastic time there... with Gregor's help, we managed to see the "must see" sights - Predjama Castle, Lake Bled and the Skocjan Caves, despite having to make our tour shorter. Will share more of our experience via a blog that I'm working on..." June '12
"We got what we expected and in fact it surpassed our expectations. The meadows were incredible. It was an easy stroll through stunning countryside with on the whole wonderful food and wine. It would be hard to improve, even the weather was good. Well done." May '12
"When we found our intended visit to a garden was closed, a quick call to Gregor Sustersic resulted in a breathtaking tour of Skocjan Caves. Gregor added his special layer of familiarity to a wonderful and intriguing adventure. We must add that we had glorious weather with just one day of rain leaving Stanjel. The storm was so severe that Marija's husband drove us to Skerlj with us peering through the windshield at some areas that we would have missed on the walk.
Hrusevje - night 1. What an introduction to beautiful Slovenia ! Boris and Ivanka are gracious hosts. Beautiful view over the fields. Discovered the local church walking off some of the jet lag with one of the farm dogs. Dinner was excellent, particularly the Appel Strudel. We awoke gently to cows passing below the window, and after breakfast were given our picnic lunch - including delicious homemade cheese…" Oct '11
"Your tour booklet is excellent - far exceeding what I have received from any similar tour agency. A nice preview of trip details, and country background. We liked the Ljubljana restaurant info and a bit of Slovene vocabulary, otherwise we didn't use it that much, but it was a quick reference for basic info (names, phones, etc). Don't change a thing!" Sep '11
"The accommodations were outstanding. Other similar tours I have taken stayed at so-so B&Bs, nothing exceptional. Here, every place we stayed, we felt like part of the family. Even at the apartment in Stanjel, the landlady went out of her way to make us feel welcome and help us out when the weather turned bad." Sep '11
"All the hosts were wonderful, but we remember specially Boris and Ivanka from Dolenc. They are such generous and kind people. Boris was teaching us Slovenian and we were teaching him some English and German. The weather was quite hot for walking, but we had beautiful sunshine every day. We loved walking through the vineyards and tasting a few grapes along the way. I could go on and tell you more, but you have been there so you know how beautiful it is. And I have to get back to work, unfortunately." Sep 11
"When I booked our trip to Slovenia (starting September 17) by telephone, Simon said, 'Oh, you're going to love this!' and so sLOVEenia proved to be... My sister and I enjoyed every moment of this trip thanks to the warmth and generosity of the Slovenes and OFH's excellent research, route notes and planning. We feel as if we have experienced 'a holiday of a lifetime' even though we have not had to circumnavigate the globe to experience it." Sep '11
"Dear Simon, Just to thank you and let you know that we had a fantastic holiday. We saw parts of Slovenia we would never have seen on a regular holiday and met some lovely Slovenian people and people from elsewhere. The Karst walks were beautiful and well thought out." Sep '11
"Ljubljana is wonderful and Gregor is a treasure! He provided a brief “orientation” on the way from the airport to the hotel and then took us and our luggage to the station the next day. Loved Pri Vitezu, people-watching on the pavement." Oct '11
I have described it to friends as an eating holiday disguised as a hike. Seriously, you have done a great job in putting it together. Thanks for making our holiday a wonderful experience." June '11
"Hello! Doug and I returned yesterday from our trip to the Karst (and a few days in Venice). I cannot even begin to express how wonderful the trip was, both in terms of what we saw, did, and ate as well as the wonderful hosts and excellent trip notes. April '11
"This particular region of Slovenia is extremely beautiful and rustic. The meadows with all the flowers were a delight at the beginning of May. Taxi options were used to cut down length of some days which made for a most relaxing holiday. The visit to Predjama caves was truly a highlight as was arriving in Trieste on the tram! Thoroughly good holiday with simple but very welcoming accomodation and hospitality. Bravo!" May '11
"Thank you all for arranging this holiday for us. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves despite getting soaked on day one and losing day two to torrential rain. The Karst area is delightful - all the people we met whether in the farms or along the way were delightful, friendly and welcoming whether or not they spoke any English. Our picnics were often supplemented by delicious apples, peaches, damsons and figs picked for us by their growers. We enjoyed the last of the flowers in the meadows, the wonderful fungi and the start of the grape harvest. "In Trieste we had an excellent dinner at Trattoria da Giovani (Via San Lorenzo 14). This was really lively and packed with locals. We sat inside which meant we could see everything that was going on. The mortadella on the counter was the most amazing sight (and size). Great! "Our hosts at Hudicevec were extremely helpful getting our wet clothes and boots dry. They were insistent that we shouldn't walk on day 2. Rightly so as the brook outside had swollen so much it was lapping against the side of the barn and the wind was very strong. Even though they were clearly very busy, they would have provided us with a trip to the Postojna caves, or got us helping preparing the damsons for jam or schnapps in the kitchen but in the end we elected to go to Slap with the luggage at the end of the morning. "Skerlj (night 5) - hard not to overdo the superlatives about this place. Lovely situation, friendly people, delicious food and excellent wine and a great night's sleep despite being over the pigs and with the first of the wine harvest/processing being in full swing. "Of course, we must also make special mention of Gregor. He took us along the old roads to Ljubljana because he wanted us to see the phenomenon of Lake Planina, the second largest 'intermittent' lake in Slovenia. It is extremely unusual for this lake to 'appear' at this time of year. An astonishing sight. "We then had an extensive guided tour of Ljubljana! Gregor's enthusiasm for his home city was extremely infectious. He also provided us with our airport transfer - that is, he picked us up in the morning, took us to Bohinj and Bled, found a wonderful place close to the airport for a late lunch (veal with boletus mushrooms - yum), before dropping us off at the terminal. Quite a transfer! He was full of ideas for other trips to Slovenia which we might well follow up. If/when we get to thinking about it, we will contact you first. "Thanks again - looking forward to the next trip already" Sep '10
"We loved the fact that we hardly met another hiker, that we saw no shops or pubs for 5 days, that everyone grows their own fruit and veg. Picking walnuts and damsons (and the odd grape) along the way was a thrill.
"Overall we had a wonderful holiday. The walking routes were very well planned, making the most of the terrain and scenery. Glad there weren't too many uphill stretches. Gregor was extremely helpful and charming." Sep '10
"We had a wonderful time in Slovenia. As you had predicted, we loved it there. We found that the walk was really well planned. The various environments were so enjoyable. The information in your booklet was also perfectly pitched to assist our understanding of the countryside we were encountering and the interpretation of the guide notes. "On the odd occasion when we made a directional error of judgement and had to turn back it was never a problem. When in doubt, read the guide more carefully! Common sense and a compass also help. The map carrier is brilliant. We had not used one like that before. Being able to see word guides and maps at a glance was a great aid to happy walking. "We found that the walk was really well planned. The various environments were so enjoyable. We didn't miss any of it, despite one dramatically stormy day mid-week, and added on a bit of extra distance with a few diversions here and there, sometimes intentional, sometimes not. "Predjama Castle and the Skocjan Caves were highlights indeed. And compliments to our post-walk driver, Gregor, who met us at the caves. He took us to Ljubljana on lesser roads and shared his in-depth knowledge of the countryside and city with us very generously. Gregor dismissed our tentative suggestion that his extracurricular efforts were deserving of an extracurricular financial contribution so we did not press the point, especially after your previous advice and comments about personal pride. "Another special overnight stay was with Marija at Stanjel. She was very considerate and intuitive and we thought the accommodation great. She gave us a wonderful breakfast too; we could not do it full justice. "We would not hesitate to recommend walking in August. It was not too hot and the meadows were a riot of flowering plants, despite the lateness of the growing season. We saw some spectacular species. The forest trees were still beautifully green and the nuts and other wild fruits and fungi starting to develop, providing a lovely ambience in the woods. The grapes were swelling well on the vines - very photogenic." Aug '10
"Just loved the unspoilt beauty of Slovenia - we didn't see another tourist until we got to Lipica. There was nothing we didn't enjoy & it exceeded our expectations." July '10
"What we liked best about our holiday was meeting the local people. They were always so friendly and gracious that we felt like we left Slovenia with friends. The booklet was excellent, providing a genuine sense of confidence with the knowledge that every detail of the trip had been addressed. I honestly cannot think of anything that could be added. We loved our holiday. The extra time that Gregor spent with us was extremely special and made us get a true sense of Slovenia.
"The route was beautiful and varied - always interesting. One of our best times was in Goce, when we were invited into Cejkotova Domacija for wine and some appetizers. The owners, Davarin and Jelka were so gracious, that we decided to make dinner reservations for the next night since our inn in Stanjel did not provide an evening meal. The multiple-course dinner was outstanding and a fairly reasonable price.
"We could not have been happier with the On Foot staff. It was very personal and helped us with details that would have been difficult for us to put together. When we had to postpone our trip due to the BA strike, it was handled wonderfully." June '10
"We loved the wonderul unspoilt Karst country, the butterflies and wild flowers, the deciduous forest and the acacia blossom making every wald fragrant. We really enjoyed the three visits to Predjama, Lipicia and Skocjan." May '09
"Terrific countryside with quietude and tranquility in abundance. Wildlife very evident, deer, woodmice, birds of prey and clouds of butterflies, charming!! Walking notes superb helped by timely compass bearings." May '09
"The best holiday I have had for years. Absolutely fantastic in all respects."
"Everywhere we stayed, the hosts were very charming and hospitable."
"We are thinking about marketing the Slovenian sandwich - the current competitors won't stand a chance against it."
"We have rated the holiday as excellent. This is because of the variety of sights, scenery and accommodation (the walk was well devised) and the unspoilt nature of the landscape."
"I've never had a doorstep Schnitzel sandwich before."
"We were able to eat yummy Prsut, cheese, olives etc with our Teran under the stars. The booklet was invaluable - we were always referring to it."
"Very well organised. As usual, the details taken care of. All we had to do was enjoy it and we did! The accommodation was varied & that's not a criticism (I don't want to travel the world cocooned in international sterility). It was good to have honest-to-goodness local dishes and produce. The taxi was waiting at the airport and transferred us to the first hotel rapidly but with a welcome stop for our first Slovenian beer!"
"One of the best holidays we have ever had!"
"We enjoyed the walks, the beautiful countryside, the accommodation, the food, the hospitality of the local people and last but not least the wine!"
"Thank you for creating a unique holiday which enabled us to appreciate fully the delightful country of Slovenia and experience the culture and traditions."
"Gregor is a gem."
"The terrain was as we expected but more beautiful, so green and serene. All in all a really enjoyable holiday in a lovely part of the world, a country we never knew existed."
"All three of the main tourist attractions you took us to on this route were outstanding - the castle, the horses and the caverns. The last two to my mind were completely beyond compare."
"Walking notes used a precise turn-of-phrase to give total confidence."
"The accommodation in Hudicevec must win the award for the most inventive cooking for taking the use of excellent ingredients one step further with different vegetables and varied ways of serving them."
"Many thanks are due to Gregor for his marvellous introduction to Slovenia and for answering our questions so patiently afterwards."
"We were particularly impressed by the variety of the walks, the terrain and the wildlife."
"Excellent holiday. Thank you very much. Lovely country. Ljubljana - a total joy."
"Slovenia is a wonderful country, incredibly beautiful & Ljubljana one of the gems of Europe."
"It was truly the best trip that I have ever taken. The hikes were beautiful!"
"Your excellent notes added an extra dimension to our walk. Not only did we have no difficulty finding our way, but we learnt so much every day."
"We think that your arrangements for the holiday were excellent, and we speak as veterans of a dozen or so such walking holidays. Your notes were the best we have seen. The countryside was beautiful."
"The people were delightful, the flower meadows magic, the food excellent, and in all sorts of ways we were agreably surprised. Gregor was delightful and very helpful."
"We very much enjoyed walking through such beautiful and unspoilt countryside and I valued the opportunity of meeting local people, staying in their homes and eating their produce."
"We THOROUGHLY enjoyed our holiday in Slovenia: it was really great. The hosts were so friendly and hospitable. The routes were interesting and very gentle to walk, even in the heat, and we didn't meet a single tourist after leaving Ljubljana until we went to Lipica! Fantastic! It was the best holiday I've had for ages."
