Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Ljubljana and, having checked in to your hotel, promenade along the river of this pretty Slovene capital.

Day 2 Spend the morning exploring Ljubljana's streets and ride the cable car up to the castle overlooking the city. Or perhaps, as a real treat, take a personal guided tour with the inimitable Gregor. Gregor will then take you to Lake Cerknica for a tour of its museum, before your short afternoon walk to the hotel in the woods at Rakov Skocjan. (7.5km, 2 hrs, CUSs 50m)
Day 3

Cerknica to Sajevce. A steep climb up through the woods before a descent to bustling Postojna and a gentle afternoon stroll through meadows and open woodland to the rural idyll of Sajevce. (25km, 7hrs, CUSs 500m;  alternatives: Walk to Postojna and visit the Postojna Caves, then take a taxi to your next accommodation (3½ hrs, 400m CUSs), OR ride with the luggage, visit caves, then walk to next accom (3½ hrs and 150m CUSs)

Day 4

Landol to Hudicevec. After a short lift to the start, you will walk through lovely meadows and sleepy villages via the restored castle of Predjama (drawbridge, secret tunnels, disappearing river and all). (13km, 5 hrs, CUSs 400m) Alternative - start at Predjama Castle then walk to Hudicevec (4 hrs)

Day 5

Hudicevec to Slap. Either walk along the wooded flanks of Mount Nanos to the village of Podnanos (or take a short transfer there), then woodland and vineyard walking above the Vipava valley, to a working vineyard - the wine is excellent. Have a glass on the terrace on arrival (22km, 6¼ hrs, 500m CUSs;  or with transfer 12km, 4 hrs, CUSs 250m)

Day 6

Slap to Stanjel. Over the ridge to the Karst via the most lovely meadow and woodland walking to the hilltop village of Stanjel. Your B&B is just next to the tower gateway. Supper at local restaurant today. (9km, 4 hrs, CUSs 342m)

Day 7

Stanjel to Tomaj. On to the wooded Karst proper, to the pretty hill village of Tomaj and a farmhouse supper with (almost) everything home-produced. Visit the wine and Prsut cellars and sample Milojka’s bread and honey.

(11km, 4 hrs, CUSs 120m)

Optional extra day

EITHER taxi to Lipica and a walk on to the famed Skocjan Caves (4 hrs, plus time for tour, CUSs 47m); taxi back;

OR for a small supplement visit, on the right day (Tue/Fri/Sun), the Lippizaner horses: a gentle walk via Sezana with its botanical gardens to the stud farm at Lipica. Start early to arrive on time for a presentation of the Classical Riding School at 3pm (pre-booked through On Foot). Taxi back to Tomaj afterwards (5 hrs plus time for tour/presentation; CUSs 107m).

All taxis payable locally

Hire mountain bikes to do both in one day! £20 pp.

OR do nothing - take a day off in Tomaj, wander round the village or swim in the hotel's outdoor pool.

Day 8

A walk via Tabor, across the edge of the Karst and on to Trieste, arriving triumphantly at the top of the city and enjoying the vertiginous tram ride from Opicina down to the centre. (14 km, 4 hrs, CUSs 300m);

Day 9

Depart hotel (or choose to stay further nights).
