If you are finishing your holiday in Trieste, why not spend an extra night at the start of your holiday in Ljubljana - a little gem of a capital city with fascinating Art Deco architecture all within walking distance of our carefully chosen hotels? As a real treat, we can arrange a personal guided tour with the inimitable Gregor. |
| Day 1 |
Hrusevje. Arrive at your first farmhouse, freshen up, have a wander into the local woods and eat your first hearty Slovenian supper. |
| Day 2 |
Landol to Hudicevec. After a short lift to the start, you will walk through lovely meadows and sleepy villages via the restored castle of Predjama (drawbridge, secret tunnels, disappearing river and all).
(13km, 5 hrs, CUSs 400m) Alternative - start at Predjama Castle then walk to Hudicevec (4 hrs) |
| Day 3 |
Podnanos to Slap. A short transfer (if wanted) to the village of Podnanos, then woodland and vineyard walking above the Vipava valley, to a working vineyard - the wine is excellent. Have a glass on the terrace on arrival.
(Recommended 8km, 4 hrs, CUSs 250m; alternatives - 7¼ hrs for purists, 6½ hrs, 3¼ hrs or 1 hr). |
| Day 4 |
Slap to Stanjel. Over the ridge to the Karst via the most lovely meadow and woodland walking to the hilltop village of Stanjel. Your B&B is just next to the tower gateway. Supper at local restaurant today.
(9km, 4 hrs, CUSs 342m) |
| Day 5 |
Stanjel to Tomaj. On to the wooded Karst proper, to the pretty hill village of Tomaj and a farmhouse supper with (almost) everything home-produced. Visit the wine and Prsut cellars and sample Milojka’s bread and honey.
(11km, 4 hrs, CUSs 120m) |
| Day 6 |
A day of choices...
EITHER (for those not going on to Trieste) a circular walk from Tomaj to Tabor through country lanes and past former border posts into Italy with, after a stiff climb, a fine view of Trieste and on a good day, Venice (14 km, 4hrs);
OR (for those going to Trieste the next day) a lift to Lipica and a walk on to the famed Skocjan Caves (4 hrs, plus time for tour, CUSs 47m);
OR do nothing - take a day off in Tomaj, wander round the town or swim in the hotel's outdoor pool.
OR for a small supplement visit, on the right day (Tue/Fri/Sun), the Lippizaner horses: a gentle walk via Sezana with its botanical gardens to the stud farm at Lipica. Start early to arrive on time for a presentation of the Classical Riding School at 3pm (pre-booked through On Foot). Lift back to Tomaj afterwards (5 hrs plus time for tour/presentation; CUSs 107m) |
| Day 7 |
EITHER (Trieste option) walk via Tabor, across the edge of the Karst and on to Trieste, arriving triumphantly at the top of the city and enjoying the vertiginous tram ride from Opicina down to the centre.
(14 km, 4 hrs, CUSs 300m);
OR (Ljubljana Option) Lipica to Skocjan Caves. A lift to Lipica for a morning’s walk to Skocjan caves (we thoroughly recommend a 1½ hr tour ... but be warned, there is a lot of walking in the caves), then our taxi will take you to your final night’s stay in your chosen hotel in Ljubljana with time to explore.
(10km, 4 hrs, CUSs 47m) |

Day 8 |
