Walking holidays, tours and vacations in Germany, Rhine-Moselle
Woodland walking between the Rhine and the Moselle
Our walk explores the wooded valleys of the Hunsrück, the land between the two rivers, finding lost castles, overgrown with ivy, as well as more stately edifices, towering majestically over the valleys as they did in the days of Balduin, Archbishop of Trier, nemesis of the knights of the Eltz Vendetta.
Starting in the little town of Kastellaun, the route first strikes towards the Moselle, reaching its precipitous vineyard slopes at the village of Alken, watched over by its own castle. Then up the Ehrbachtal with its mill-pubs, and a trip down the picturesque Hunsrückbahn railway to Roman Boppard (“Bodobrica”) on the Rhine. On the other side, a footpath high above the spectacular Rhine gorge, takes you to the Marksburg, the best of all the Rhine castles, and two nights’ stay in a charming old inn. You can spend your last day taking a boat trip up the Rhine, walk to Koblenz, or just relax.
To make your woodland walking even greener - travel by train (just 6 hours London to Koblenz!).
