ARRIVING BY AIR
 

The best "local" airports are Bournemouth, Southampton or Bristol. Intercontinental flights use London Heathrow or London Gatwick.

ARRIVING BY TRAIN

 

Nearest railway station:

Start: Barnstaple

Finish: Taunton

 

Sample rail journey to Barnstaple from Paris:

Paris Nord: Eurostar to London St Pancras, transfer by underground to London Paddington.

South West Trains service to Exeter St Davids and change for train to Barnstaple. ~ 8½ hrs.

 

Taunton: Train to London Paddington, underground to London St Pancras. Eurostar to Paris Nord. ~ 5½ hrs

Getting to the start of the walk:

The first hotel is in Barnstaple and the last in Dunster. Transfer times and methods are suggestions from London Gatwick and London Heathrow airports, but if you arrive at either Bristol, Bournemouth or Southampton airports, then transfer times will be shorter in most cases. After a taxi transfer on Day 2, your walk starts in Combe Martin.

 

LONDON GATWICK

Outward: Trains to Barnstaple (5 hrs) then 20min walk or local taxi to first hotel

Return: First steam train from Dunster, followed by bus transfer to Taunton and onward train/bus travel enables arrival around 15.00

 

LONDON HEATHROW

Outward: Trains to Barnstaple (4hrs 45mins) then 20min walk or local taxi to first hotel

Return: First steam train from Dunster, followed by bus transfer to Taunton and onward train/bus travel  enables arrival around 15.00
