Greece: Corfu, the Vikos Gorge and the Meteora
Island, mountains and monasteries
Full Description

A self guided hike based in Corfu, the Vikos Gorge (Zagoria) and the Meteora monasteries (add-on).

Grade:  Medium-hard (Vikos).  Corfu and Meteora medium

Ionian island, stone villages, dramatic gorge and monasteries atop rock pinnacles

This remarkable route offers a choice among three areas of NW Greece: the island of Corfu, mountainous Zagoria, famed for its traditional stone villages and the "deepest gorge in the world", and the Meteora, with its iconic and historically barely accessible monasteries. On Foot Holidays can offer you a mix'n'match selection of two or three, depending on the amount of time you have available, or even the Vikos Gorge by itself.

Most will start with a couple of nights in Corfu town, whose Venetian heritage is clear in its narrow alleyways and fortifications. There is a menu of walks for you in different parts of the island, all accessible by local bus. We focus on the hill country in the north of the island and the rugged and beautiful west coast, where you can swim from sandy beaches in out-of-season calm.

After crossing by ferry to the mainland, you would transfer via Ioannina (a historic lakeside town - fit a night in here if you have time) to Zagoria, a very different landscape and culture. These mountain villages of Epirus are fiercely protective of their way of life and heritage, which you can sample in friendly accommodation in the On Foot Holidays style. The walking is second-to-none in this region, and bearing in mind the drama of the scenery, surprisingly doable. The Vikos Gorge is a must for walkers of all persuasions, while the walk to the Astraka refuge takes you high into the Alpine zone.

As an add-on why not spend a couple of nights among the monasteries of the Meteora, where we have fashioned a walk that shows off the best of the scenery of this extraordinary place, while enabling you to visit two of the best Orthodox monasteries, perched on their pillars, and until recently inaccessible except by rope and ladder. Walked by On Foot staff:  Simon and Mary

Lonely Planet Traveller's Orla Thomas walked this route in 2015.  Read her article here.

Maximum group size 12 (four double/twins and two smaller doubles only at Kapesovo.  Twins may require hotel change in Papingo).

TAXIS: The headline (Corfu/Vikos) price assumes the use of public buses (cheap, scenic, client pays) between the port of Igoumenitsa, Ioannina, and back to Igoumenitsa. Clients' own car or hire car (we include taxi back to car at end of Zagoria section) - further savings. We can, however, also offer full taxi options (see "Prices"). Flight times and airports used may dictate using taxis at one or both ends - contact On Foot for advice.

Self-Guiding introduction by Geo Zagori in Vikos area (subject to availability) - accompanying you on your first one or two walking days, or guiding services for whole walking route.  See "Prices".

Highlights
  • Corfu, a holiday island in a sapphire sea
  • The west coast of Corfu and sandy beaches
  • Corfu town and its Venetian heritage
  • Zagoria and its unspoilt stone villages
  • The Vikos Gorge (all 12km and 900m deep of it)
  • Overnighting in a refuge at 2000m (optional!)
  • The walk to the Dragon Lake
  • The monasteries of the Meteora on their rock pinnacles (add-on)
  • Ioannina, Ali Pasha's seat, and its dramatic lake (add-on)

RECOMMENDED: Stop off for a night in Ioannina, an underestimated, lively Greek city with a beautiful old quarter and dramatic lakeside setting. Spend a day with your host at Kapesovo, learning traditional skills, gathering mushrooms and wild flowers, cooking local dishes (depending on season). Spend an extra day at Papingo just relaxing, and doing some short local walks. Extend your stay in Corfu to explore more of the island and do more of our walks (courtesy of Sunflower walking guidebooks, edited and checked by On Foot!).
