Walking holidays, tours and vacations in Croatia, Istria
A Journey to the Adriatic Sea
Istria lies in the very north of Croatia. It is a verdant territory which has been fought over, won and lost throughout history, leaving a landscape marked by all who lived and prospered here down the ages, particularly apparent in the medieval hilltop towns. A land of hills, meadows, vineyards and woods, of churches with medieval frescoes, and of the ancient Glagolitic script.
We start our walk in fashionable Motovun (of film festival fame), only a stone’s throw from the Slovenian border, and wander through unspoilt hill country, staying at tiny pensions in three further hilltop villages, before turning our faces south to a gentle assault of Mount Ucka, the bastion defending the interior from the Adriatic. Over the far side of the mountain, we walk down to the sea to spend two nights at pretty Moscenicka Draga, where the fish is fresh, the beaches uncrowded and the water sparkling clean and warm. | | |

| Day 1 |
Arrive at Motovun. Freshen up, have a wander around this fascinating old town, and have a good dinner ready to start your walk tomorrow. |
| Day 2 |
Motovun to Sovinjak. A beautiful lung-expander to set the scene for your Istrian adventure. Wind down the hill from Motovun into the valley and then choose one of two attractive options to reach your second hilltop village. Ask your hostess for the keys to the two Sovinjak churches. Option A 4 hrs 40 mins, CUSs 450m or Option B 5 hrs, CUSs 550m) |
| Day 3 |
Sovinjak to Hum. A day of ups and downs! Start off down to the remote farmstead of Senica in its deeply wooded valley and up the other side to the high hilltop village of Vrh, with splendid views all round. The path to Krusvari is pretty as is the restored mill at Kotli which may be open for a drink. A beautiful walk along the meadows to Bencici is followed by an extended climb through the woods to the extraordinary village of Hum. Ask at the Konoba to see the frescoes in the church. (6 hrs, CUSs 700m, or you may ask Marija for one of her sons to take you by car to Vrh (timing point 1.40), avoiding one long "up") |
| Day 4 |
Hum to Roc. Starting off along the Glagolitic Trail with its inscribed monuments, you walk up onto the limestone plateau at Kras and then across it to Rocko Polje. Then a visit to Sv. Toma and the hidden valley of Kompanj before your next hilltop town. (18 km, 4 hrs, CUSs 350m) |
| Day 5 |
Roc to Poklon. Four alternative routes (including a trip on a little train), and some hill walking for the hardy. Gentler souls can enjoy excellent views from the path leading to the high plateau village of Brest, then on into the forest and wild country, before arriving at Poklon, your first glimpse of the Adriatic and your night’s stop, on the slopes of Mount Ucka (14-18 km, 4-7 hrs, CUSs 300m-800m depending on route) |
| Day 6 |
Poklon to Moscenicka Draga. A beautiful high walk to end. A level woodland track along the eastern slopes of Ucka, (which you can climb if you wish). Emerge from the woods to your first really spectacular views of the Adriatic and the islands, before your long downhill through the enchanting Moscenicka valley to your final destination (18 km, 5 hrs, CUSs 200m (down 1000m)). |
| Day 7 |
Free day to explore Moscenicka Draga, to relax on the beach, take an excursion (in season) along the coast or to an island, visit the old village on the hill or try some more walking on the slopes of Ucka. |

"The transfer/booklet information was perfect."
"Vlado was excellent and arranged everything very efficiently for us."
"We found your arrangements excellent. The booklet and walking notes were very well presented and easy to use. The booklet gave just the right amount of background information."
"A perfect On Foot Holiday. Istria in May was paradise. Butterflies, bees, wildflowers, rabbits, an owl, a soaring hawk, tiny villages, high rocky hills. Bread. Wonderful bread!"
"We had a really good holiday. Mostly the weathjer was good and the wild flowers were incredible. The fish at the seaside was great. Many thanks."
"What struck us most forcibly and repeatedly about this holiday was the amazing variety. Each day was different, terrain, pace, mood and scenery. We think we went at the optimum time of year for flowers - just staggering variety, but also insects and birds in profusion. Variety too in the types of accommodation and each was good in its own way. The walk was designed with great skill and a great joy as it unfolded each day. All the notes and arrangements were excellent."
"It seems we have only mentioned our stomachs when writing about the generous food portions, this is only because we enjoyed the whole holiday so much!"
"Nothing prepared us for the wondrous flowers and animals we saw, including an otter on day one and an entire nursery of wild boar on day 5. The most wonderful spring flowers I've seen for years."
"Congratulations on a wonderful product."
