Walking holidays, tours and vacations in East Slovenia
Where the Alps meet the plains
Our second Slovenian walk is at the eastern end of this jewel of a country, where the Alpine foothills meet the plains of central Europe, Austria-Hungary the Ottoman Empire and solid Northern Europe the fiery Balkans. It runs close to the Croatian border, winding from the spa village of Podcetrtek through bucolic hills and meadows to the ancient settlement of Brezice on the Sava River.
This is a countryside of small vineyards lovingly tended by families with whom you will stay: and if you arrive at harvest time you will probably be roped in to help out. The wines, which you can taste with your hosts, are modest and little known outside Slovenia, but fresh and vibrant, best drunk young.
And why not extend your stay with a day or two in Ljubljana?
This walk can also be reversed, starting at Brezice and ending at Podcetrtek. | | |
