Full Description

Guided walking holidays, tours and vacations in the Julian Alps, Slovenia

Mountain cheesemakers and flower meadow picnics

From the inn in the tiny village of Podkoren, tucked against the borders with Austria and Italy, our only guided walk takes you into the hills above the River Sava to show you the mountains of the Julian Alps, around which you will be walking for the next few days. You walk up across the Vrsic pass via first world war mule tracks serving the Isonzo front (made famous in Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms"), to the Trenta valley, and a stay for three nights in a remote and traditional mountain chalet, looked after by Mitja and his family.

The unforgettable emerald Soca river is our companion to Bovec, where we will take you rafting (optional), on a high walk over the top to Bohinj, the magical lake beside which we stay for the final three nights, walking the meadows and the approaches to Mt. Triglav, experiencing the gentle culture of this little country.

Our walk is masterfully designed, and guided, by Janez to show us the best of the scenery while keeping the walking at medium grade, and anyone who has done one of our "medium" walks will not find this one too challenging. Enjoy our picnics, prepared for you by local cheesemakers and hosts, and eaten in unforgettable surroundings; and discover new friends among equally independent-minded On Foot walkers.

Route designed by

Janez Golob

was born into a woodworker's family, later earned a degree in architecture and taught technical subjects at a secondary wood engineering school. Now in retirement, Janez still designs unique woodturning products.

He is a mountain rescue team member and a mountain guide and has a thorough knowledge of Slovenian and foreign mountains. He has climbed in the Alps, the Caucasus and was a member of two Himalayan expeditions.

Designing this route and leading parties is a natural challenge for Janez, since it is, in his words,

“about introducing new people to the part of Slovenia that has rich history and an unspoilt environment”.
