Walking holidays, tours and vacations in Slovenia

Prsut, Teran wine and disappearing rivers

The “Kras”, or Karst, in the west of this tiny country, is an area of woodlands, meadows and unspoilt villages with an ever-present backdrop of mountains. Its limestone foundation gives rise to the most extraordinary geological phenomena - vast cave systems, one of which you visit, rivers that disappear into cliffs (you visit a castle over one), and a jumbled woodland landscape. This porous rock is mother also to some fine vineyards producing the unique Teran wine, a ferocious red to be drunk as an accompaniment to the local prosciutto (“Prsut”). You will stay in farms that produce their own wine, hams and honey. You stay also next to the original Lipizzaner stud and end your holiday with a night either in the lively Italian seaport of Trieste or the pretty Slovenian capital Ljubljana (depending on your choice of airport).

Itinerary
Day 1 Hudicevec. Arrive at your first farmhouse, freshen up, have a wander into the mushroom-filled woods and eat your first hearty Slovenian supper.
Day 2 Predjama Castle. Emilijan drives you to the start of a walk through lovely meadows and sleepy villages via the restored castle of Predjama (drawbridge, secret tunnels, disappearing river and all). (5 hrs, CUSs 176m) Alternative - start at Predjama Castle then walk to Hudicevec (3½ hrs)
Day 3 Podnanos to Slap. A short transfer (if requested) to the village of Podnanos, then woodland and vineyard walking above the Vipava valley, to a working vineyard - the wine is excellent. Have a glass on the terrace on arrival. (4 hrs, CUSs 250m). Alternatives - 6 hrs, 3 hrs or 1 hr.
Day 4 Slap to Stanjel. Over the ridge to the Karst via the most lovely meadow and woodland walking to the hilltop village of Stanjel. Your B&B is just next to the tower gateway. Supper at local restaurant today (4 hrs, CUSs 342m).
Day 5 Stanjel to Tomaj. On to the wooded Karst proper, to the pretty hill village of Tomaj and a farmhouse supper with (almost) everything home-produced. Visit the wine and Prsut cellars and sample Milojka’s bread and honey (4 hrs, CUSs 58m).
Day 6 Tomaj to Lipica. A gentle though longer day’s walk through the Karst via Sezana with its botanical gardens to the famed stud farm at Lipica, home to the Lipizzaner horses, where you stay (and eat) in the adjoining hotel. Start early to arrive on time for a presentation of the Classical Riding School at 3 o’clock on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays (pre-booked through On Foot) (5 hrs, CUSs 103m).
Day 7 Lipica to Skocjan Caves, then taxi to Trieste or Ljubljana. A morning’s walk to Skocjan caves (we thoroughly recommend a 1½ hr tour), then our taxi will take you to your final night’s stay in your chosen hotel with time to explore (3½ hrs, CUSs 47m) Alternative - taxi then walk 2 hrs.
Day 8 Depart hotel (or choose to stay further nights).

Customer comments

"The best holiday I have had for years. Absolutely fantastic in all respects."

"Everywhere we stayed, the hosts were very charming and hospitable."

"We are thinking about marketing the Slovenian sandwich - the current competitors won't stand a chance against it."

"We have rated the holiday as excellent. This is because of the variety of sights, scenery and accommodation (the walk was well devised) and the unspoilt nature of the landscape."

"I've never had a doorstep Schnitzel sandwich before."

"We were able to eat yummy Prsut, cheese, olives etc with our Teran under the stars. The booklet was invaluable - we were always referring to it."

"Very well organised. As usual, the details taken care of. All we had to do was enjoy it and we did! The accommodation was varied & that's not a criticism (I don't want to travel the world cocooned in international sterility). It was good to have honest-to-goodness local dishes and produce. The taxi was waiting at the airport and transferred us to the first hotel rapidly but with a welcome stop for our first Slovenian beer!"

"One of the best holidays we have ever had!"

"We enjoyed the walks, the beautiful countryside, the accommodation, the food, the hospitality of the local people and last but not least the wine!"

"Thank you for creating a unique holiday which enabled us to appreciate fully the delightful country of Slovenia and experience the culture and traditions."

"Gregor is a gem."

"The terrain was as we expected but more beautiful, so green and serene. All in all a really enjoyable holiday in a lovely part of the world, a country we never knew existed."

"All three of the main tourist attractions you took us to on this route were outstanding - the castle, the horses and the caverns. The last two to my mind were completely beyond compare."

"Walking notes used a precise turn-of-phrase to give total confidence."

"The accommodation in Hudicevec must win the award for the most inventive cooking for taking the use of excellent ingredients one step further with different vegetables and varied ways of serving them."

"Many thanks are due to Gregor for his marvellous introduction to Slovenia and for answering our questions so patiently afterwards."

"We were particularly impressed by the variety of the walks, the terrain and the wildlife."

"Excellent holiday. Thank you very much. Lovely country. Ljubljana - a total joy."

"Slovenia is a wonderful country, incredibly beautiful & Ljubljana one of the gems of Europe."

"It was truly the best trip that I have ever taken. The hikes were beautiful!"

"Your excellent notes added an extra dimension to our walk. Not only did we have no difficulty finding our way, but we learnt so much every day."

"We think that your arrangements for the holiday were excellent, and we speak as veterans of a dozen or so such walking holidays. Your notes were the best we have seen. The countryside was beautiful."

"The people were delightful, the flower meadows magic, the food excellent, and in all sorts of ways we were agreably surprised. Gregor was delightful and very helpful."

"We very much enjoyed walking through such beautiful and unspoilt countryside and I valued the opportunity of meeting local people, staying in their homes and eating their produce."

"We THOROUGHLY enjoyed our holiday in Slovenia: it was really great. The hosts were so friendly and hospitable. The routes were interesting and very gentle to walk, even in the heat, and we didn't meet a single tourist after leaving Ljubljana until we went to Lipica! Fantastic! It was the best holiday I've had for ages."
