After much development work and rigorous testing by recent On Foot walkers, this app is being prepared for all our routes during 2024, and some are already available – ask us which routes are available now. A few routes will be available as app-only for a trial period.

- The app contains the best available map backgrounds, including Ordnance Survey in the UK
- A marker will show where you are, and route directions will pop up on the map as you walk
- A beep will notify you if you leave the path, bringing you peace of mind

Frequently asked questions
What do I need to do before travelling?
Make sure that you download everything before travelling – we’ll send you instructions and login information when you’ve paid the balance for your holiday. You can then go to the App Store or Google Play to install the app (free), and use your personal login to download your holiday. It is a good idea to check it over before travelling so you are familiar with how it works, and please be sure to read all the travel advice in advance. If walking with the app only (no printed materials), we’ll send you a dummy holiday in advance, to make sure everything is working as it should on your device.
Will the app use mobile data or need wifi?
When you start to walk each day, turn off mobile data and wifi on your phone so that you don’t incur charges. You just need to have ‘location’ turned on, so that GPS satellites can find you.
Will the app use up battery power?
Tests on a variety of phones suggest a power usage of between 30% and 70% of a fully charged battery during a day’s walking. However, this depends on the age of the battery, so keep wifi and data switched off while walking, to reduce the drain from other apps, calls etc. We recommend that you take two phones with the app downloaded, with one in reserve should the other fail, and/or a fully charged battery pack. The app is available to all members of your party.
What should I do if I need assistance or want to report problems?
The ‘Report Problem’ button at the top of the screen will take you to advice on how to get immediate assistance in an emergency. You can also use this button to report less urgent issues to us, such as recent changes to footpaths, errors in our directions, or difficulties using the app.
Will information on the app be up-to-date?
All the contents for your holiday should be correct to the best of our knowledge when you download it. Any minor changes that we make remotely to your day walks will update each time you open the app and have mobile or wifi connectivity. We will contact you direct if there are any significant changes to your holiday arrangements.
How reliable is the GPS location?
As with any GPS system, your location is usually accurate to within 5 to 10 metres, but can be less accurate in very mountainous areas, woodland or confined urban environments. If in doubt, stand still for a minute and wait for the spot indicating your location to settle, and if necessary move a short distance and try again.
