Self-guided walking holidays in an unspoilt Europe

“Real” Europe.  What does it mean?  Self-guided walking holidays are the best way to discover the still-vibrant rural soul which infuses so many lesser-known areas of Europe, and to discover the beauty that arises from the harmony of man, history, culture and landscape. Our mission is to give you the freedom of discovery.

We know that you have different walking needs and abilities and we have walks from 4 to 14 nights and of different grades to suit everybody.  We can even give you a tester day with our local contact to get you used to the concept of self-guiding.  And of course we carry your heavy luggage, so all you need to carry is a light day-pack.

Above all however we see ourselves as enablers.  Our team of head office staff, local contacts and indispensible hosts is committed to allowing you to find the very best that rural Europe can offer.  Once you have done one walk you will come back for more.  To make this possible we cover thirteen countries (to date):

Italy, Spain, France, England, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Portugal.  Check them all out here.

Time for a coffee?

Thursday 7th September | Posted by Simon Scutt

A recent request for recommendations for good coffee shops on our routes set us thinking about the best spots to re-caffeinate. And where better to start than Italy, in the Eternal City of Rome. After four days of walking in the Sabine Hills, the bustling city could be a bit of a culture shock, but “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” – drink coffee! The locals will gulp down a quick espresso at the counter, but the creators of Faro ...

What a real treat the Bohemian Paradise was. Yet another great holiday from the On Foot team. The walks were fabulous; the organisation and walking directions were excellent, as usual. The accommodation of a good standard and the walks themselves were well paced and had amazing and unique scenery. The overall experience was a really positive one that we wouldn’t mind repeating if there weren’t so many other walks to explore.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

We have booked with On Foot previously on a number of occassions (this one was our second this year!). We have found them to be a very professional outfit that care about their customers and deliver an excellent service.

Excellent organisation for transport of luggage to allow all day freedom to walk. All accommodation of good standard and advice on interesting diversions on the walks much appreciated. Route maps invaluable for self-guided tour - we made no mistakes on the routes. We had good weather throughout which made this a delightful experience. Telephone contact from the Italian representative on our arrival at the first hotel was reassuring in case of problems although none occurred.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Excellent service both initially in the UK and in Italy.

I chose (since I had previously cycled the main Camino)to restrict myself to the Asturias section of the Primitivo - Oviedo (more precisely, Salas) to Lugo. I had read a journalistic account of this route some years ago, which stressed the physical challenge of the Primitivo. I approached the week with some trepidation given my age (72) but in fact it didn't prove particularly difficult. More important than the distances are the Cumulative Uphill Stretches; in effect, one is climbing a decent-sized hill and doing a long-distance walk. Bag transfer and pre-booked accommodation removes stress. I was entranced by the scenery and pastoral nature of the landscape; at one point I foun d myself virtually walking through a huge milking parlour!

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

My first contacts with On Foot were by phone and the fact that I was speaking to someone who had recently walked the route was very helpful. The company tailored the week to my requirements and the various arrangements (taxi transfers etc.) worked very satisfactorily. My one engagement with the local representative (over delayed bag transfer) proved highly effective.

We had two nights on Corfu which was beautifully mixed, with an afternoon in the town and a day walking in the hills and along the coast - lovely. Then five nights in the Pindos Mountains which we found perfect walking country with superb little inns and places to eat along the way, as well a an ecellt day walking the Vikos Gorge. The baggage transfers were all very efficient and walking directions accurate. Then a day in the Meteora where the travel arrangements worked out very well and the route notes took us off the beatne track, enabling is to avoid other tourists as much as possible. `all the accommodation was excellent and the whole service couldn't be faulted.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Very helpful even when I changed the itinerary after we had booked; prompt replies and a totally well run and efficient trip. I appreciated the phone call just before we left home to check if we are alOK.

Seven days walking in the Sabine Hills in Umbria, amidst medieval villages, old Roman villas, ancient olive groves, wild pigs, old churches, mountains, valleys and towns. Wonderful chance to explore a new place without the burdens of walking with a group or carrying luggage. Great route maps, wonderful and unique accomodations, perfect mix of outdoor activity, culture and great food.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Very well organized, responsive and reliable. OnFoot Holidays succeeded in arranging a trip for the two of us that felt as if we were amongst the few that had ever done it. All of the arrangements went off without a hitch and luggage was successfully transferred each day.

My son and I enjoyed a five day walking holiday in the Dolomites. The walks were self-guided, but the maps and route details were excellent. Our accommodation was pre-booked, ranging from friendly bed and breakfasts and a mountain refuge, to a classy hotel at the finish. This was a great way to savour stunning mountain scenery and true Italian hospitality.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

We booked a walking holiday in Italy with On Foot Holidays last year, so were very happy to book again this year. They did all the hard work behind the scenes (route planning and guidance, accommodation booking, baggage transfers etc.) leaving us to relax and enjoy the walking. They were particularly helpful in updating us prior to the walk on route changes caused by a landslide and flooding, while their local guide was always on hand to assist during the holiday.

Based around walking routes they have meticulously planned, Onfootholidays offer flexible holidays for walkers. The routes take walkers from one night's accommodation (always of high standard, and often exceptional) to the next, with luggage transfers provided so there is no need carry all one's holiday clothes when walking. From the planning phase to returning home again, the office staff are very knowledgeable, tirelessly helpful, and will adapt itineraries and accommodation bookings to suit each walker's needs. Maps and route plans are provided, and there is always local backup a 'phone call away, but this is not an organised walking holiday in the usual sense. It's not guided, and is all the better for that. One makes one's own way from place to place, and such are the areas in which the walks are organised, one can walk all day and see very few other people. Perfect (for us at least).

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Onfootholidays is a small enough operator to be able to provide a highly personalised service. All the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble.

My wife and I did a 5 day self-guided Walk along the Siren coast in Italy, from Amalfi to Sorrento. The walk, organised by On Foot Holidays, included pre-booked hotel accommodation and luggage transfers from hotel to hotel in Amalfi, Praiano, Positano, Sant' Agata and Sorrento. With a small daypack and bottle of water we walked around 12 to 16 km each day along old walking tracks enjoying beautiful scenery, undulating terrain, flora and fauna, with stunning views of the coastline, stopping each day in a different village. We enjoyed good food and wine along the way.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

The holiday was well organised by On Foot Holidays. They provided accurate and good reliable information including maps, mobile phone app with GPS and plenty of useful information about each place and about each part of the walk. Everything went to plan making it easy and enjoyable. Back-up and support was readily available through local contacts if needed. Accommodation and food was as expected.

We walked over 40 Miles...beside lakes and rivers, in the rain and in the sun, up and down mountains, through silver birch and chestnut forests, across meadows, beside ancient stone ruins, along old cobblestone pathways, over bridges, alongside cattle and sheep, through tiny villages and medieval towns, alongside vineyards and tomato gardens ...we walked and chatted with old men picking Porcini mushrooms, and a cattle herder, and waved to locals who have rarely seen a tourist come through their tiny hamlet before... we walked to the top of the sacred Monte Mesma and captured the breathtaking view and talked to a monk who was more than happy to say hello, we hiked past dozens of tiny rural chapels- where Ben sometimes lit candles and prayed for my health. We saw Italy in a way that you could only do by simply walking and being right in the midst of the nature, the culture, and the people...the entire experience was in a word...MAGICAL!

This was a brilliantly designed and varied 7 day walk in south Devon, across the eastern fringes of Dartmoor, through quaint South Hams villages and ending up by the sea in history-laden Dartmouth. Too many highlights to mention here, but if you can do this walk in September, make sure you spend the second Tuesday of that month in Widecombe-in-the-Moor, at the age-old Widecombe Fair. Tom Cobley still rides his old grey mare there....

It is impossible to fault On Foot Holidays. The whole holiday experience with them was a delight. Great customer service, detailed and accurate daily walking notes, excellent B&B choices, superbly varied route and always available if needed.

Self guided walking holiday using maps and directions from On Foot Holidays. They planned the route, booked the hotels, arranged baggage transfer between hotels, provided transport information to and from the airport. The routes and hotels were great and very individual. The holiday felt like an adventure instead of a package holiday.

We had a wonderful time, we can't stop talking about it, one of the best holidays we have ever had,, we would class ourselves as dog walkers not hikers, so this was perfect for us, but just pushed us out our comfort zone. The route was like stepping back in time, vineyards, churches on gently rolling hills, and no hedges , just open wooded landscapes with no tourists. Our party of four expanded to six after meeting an Australian couple who had got lost, they weren't with on foot holidays! We generally arrived at 3,00 at our accommodation, and after a reviving glass or two of wine, rested before dinner, served early in the evening. Dinner was a highlight with good food good wine and good company, these were days to remember for rest of your life.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Excellent in every possible way, they aren't tour operators, they are personal holiday organisers, nothing is too much trouble. The first morning we couldn't walk because of torrential rain, so were taken to some caves where we spent thee wonderous hours, ,the driver waited until we had finished and then took us back to the start of our walk, all part of the service.

A very well planned and organised walking holiday in the Dolomites which allowed us to experience a variety of different scenery. The accommodation was excellent and varied from good hotels to a refuge in the mountains. The walking notes and other information provided was, as always, to a very high standard and ensured we got the most of our time there.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

The staff at on foot are so helpful throughout the whole process of planning, booking and arranging the holiday. The staff know the walks and locations and are able to advise on various aspects such as difficulty of walking, the best time of year to visit an area. The information provided is always of a very high quality and it is very reassuring to have a local contact whilst on holiday.

We took our 2nd holiday with On Foot and I thought it couldn't be better than the first but it was. We did the Castles of the Rheine and everything about it exceeded our expectations. The walk was lovely, varied and accurately described. The accommodation was really good and where we had an evening meal it was great. Breakfasts were plentiful and tasty and the villages we went through were interesting and beautiful. Our luggage was moved without fuss every day and we highly recommend this holiday.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:
