Self-guided walking holidays in an unspoilt Europe

“Real” Europe.  What does it mean?  Self-guided walking holidays are the best way to discover the still-vibrant rural soul which infuses so many lesser-known areas of Europe, and to discover the beauty that arises from the harmony of man, history, culture and landscape. Our mission is to give you the freedom of discovery.

Our self-guided hiking tours cover most of southern and central Europe, including Italy, with its wealth of landscape, food and wine and culture.  Our walking vacations in Spain explore the north of the peninsula in great depth, while our self-guided France holidays concentrate on the mid and south-east of the country.

The rest of Europe is by no means forgotten though – with three tours in England, three in Greece and two in Croatia as well as many other countries.  Check out all the options by using the drop down list above.

You will normally stay in small, family run accommodation and will fortify the inner man as the locals do – with home grown foods and the best local wines. And we carry your luggage, so that you can concentrate on the serious job of enjoying your holiday. Each of our routes is designed by a local, and has a goal – somewhere great to arrive at – and we have routes for all walking abilities and tastes. We love to talk to you too, so contact our office for the best and most personal service you will get from any walking holiday company.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

This is the 3rd trip we've done with On Foot Holidays (Amalfi Coast and Spain's Basque Country before this one) and each time we've had some beautiful routes, easy to follow route notes and saw some gorgeous parts of Europe. The On Foot Crew are very professional and responsive.

This was a fantastic holiday - the trails were beautiful and the walking was wonderful. With not many other people around, it felt like we had it all to ourselves. At times, we reached the ridge after a steep climb with a great sense of achievement and delight, and relished walking under the shade of the glorious trees or in the open with stunning, far-reaching views. What a pleasure to eat our packed lunches in such magnificent scenery and then to walk on to the next hotel, which we knew would be good - and greeted with a much welcomed cold drink after a hot day's walking. Perfect!

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

I was very impressed with On Foot Holidays and greatly enjoyed my trip with them. From the beginning they proved themselves to be knowledgeable and helpful with an eye for detail. Their Walker's Pack was crammed full of incredibly useful information, both practical and of local interest. And the instructions must have been good because we didn't get lost once! I appreciated the travel instructions and how carefully they chose our hotels - all very comfortable with delicious food for dinner and packed lunches, and delightful hosts that greatly enhanced and enriched our time in Italy. It was unexpectedly extremely hot when we went, and to have the option to shorten the walks at certain points was a godsend in the soaring temperatures! Not all companies offer this kind of service. I have no hesitation in recommending their value for money, excellent walking trails and instructions, and all fronted by very courteous and obliging staff. They took great care in getting every aspect of our holiday as perfect as possible and it was a pleasure to correspond with them.

We hiked from Amalfi to Sorrento - not on the road, but in the hills behind the seaside villages. The route took us along mule tracks and pathways used for centuries, I imagine. The beauty of those routes needs little elaboration, but for me, the beauty also lay in the opportunity to get off the beaten track and away from the early July holiday crowds.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot Holidays organised our trip. They were accommodating, professional and apparently work 24 hours a day. I'm not sure how many holidays they organise at one time, but they take a really personal interest in the success of your trip. For them it's not just a job.

My cousin and I enjoyed the 5-day independent walking holiday in Tuscany in May. We were late booking as other travel plans had unexpectedly fallen through at the last minute. The team at On Foot were simply fabulous in helping us organize this trip in just a few days, emails flying madly around the world through all time zones (I live in New Zealand, my cousin lives in Canada, On Foot is in the UK, and the hotels are in Italy). Once there at last, we relaxed into the joy of Tuscany. The walks were lovely with detailed instructions plus ample historical and site notes. Of course the scenery was stunning scenery (May flowers, oh my!). The accommodation was lovely. The towns are charming. Food and wine, well, you're in Tuscany aren't you? Transport of our suitcases was effortless, and we could shorten walks by getting a lift with our bags. We were contacted by Daniel (on the ground contact in Italy) on our first night, and we knew he was there if we needed anything (we didn't). In short, a superb experience. I had not done an independent walking tour before, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so again, especially with On Foot. If you like the idea of having electronic backup, I recommend Viewranger, a great free app where you can plot your route on a topo map (use a tablet--a phone would be too small) or On Foot can forward the links to you of the routes and you can just download them. I had Viewranger, but the written instructions On Foot provided are so detailed I never used it except a couple of times to just confirm we were on the right track. Nice mix of open country, woodland, and farmland, with most of the walking paths and back roads through rolling hills--except for that climb at the end of the day up to a hill town!

We spent 7 days hiking through the hills and ancient hilltop cities of Tuscany (Siena, Bagno Vignoni, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano), followed by a couple of days sight-seeing in Rome. And, of course, enjoying fabulous Italian cuisine and wine the entire time.

We were a party of 5 who spent had 4 day walk thru the Zagori region, including the Vikos gorge, the deepest in Europe., in mid June.2019. We stayed in traditional stone villages, with enthusiastic local hosts, who took pride in their accomodation and home cooking. This is unspoilt Greece, with a beautiful climate for early summer walking. The wildflowers were beautiful, the walking paths uncrowded , the Vikos gorge spectacular. We would highly recommend this beautiful corner of Greece.

On Foot Holidays created an exceptional vacation for us. They were very helpful with planning, and while in-country, the trip was seamless. The materials provided for the trek were highly detailed, the towns, hotels, and restaurants were perfect, and the local support was very helpful. The trails were by and large well marked and easy to follow. The views were beautiful. We particularly enjoyed the small towns we stayed in. They were picturesque, and seemed less traveled. It felt like we had the Pyrenees to ourselves.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Walking for 6 days with an extra rest day in the middle at the highest point and one at the end, on the Ligurian coast. The walking was on good paths, with varied scenery, all very beautiful and quiet- met virtually no on else! We were very lucky to have excellent weather. The accommodation was all very good and very individual. The food was excellent and the hosts all charming. Everything worked to plan. The views and the flowers were fabulous!

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

This is our 3rd holiday with On Foot . We have always felt confident that they know what we like and get it right. This applies to the walking- the initial descriptions are correct, then the notes and maps provided are very good. The routes are well thought out and mostly very well marked and the distances have always been comfortable for us.They seem to approach the route planning with intelligence, and respond to everything quickly and appropriately if there are questions or updates or corrections. This intelligent approach also applies to the low key but very good accommodation- they choose the right hosts, in the right places. In planning the holiday, they answer questions about accommodation and possible extensions etc with what seems like an understanding of who we are what we like to do. The people on the ground are good too. We have confidence they can sort out any issues that might arise, small or large. Everyone seems to be on the same page as to the style. You get what you pay for; there are no hidden costs. And there are nice touches, like the provision of relevant timetables, and a phone call the day before the holiday begins to check in with you that all is well and to wish you a nice time! They have many walks I would love to do! I hope we can do another with them soon. (I cannot get the survey to register 10 on the last question about recommending On Foot, but I would like to give it 10)

An amazing 6 day walk along part of the Galician Coast in North West Spain. Walking solo following the Atlantic coast line, covering varied distances through unspoilt coastal villages, along cliff tops and occasionally inland through countryside and woodland. Everchanging scenery from rugged wave battered rocks to perfect white sand crescent beaches, following the chain of lighthouses to reach Finisterre ( end of the earth). Staying in a variety of different types of accommodation all of a very good standard, sampling the wonderful fresh seafood along the way.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

The very knowledgeable team answered all my questions efficiently from my very first enquiry, nothing was too much trouble. My luggage was transported daily and airport transfers organised, including help with flights and an extra days extension to my holiday at the end.
