Self-guided walking holidays in an unspoilt Europe

“Real” Europe.  What does it mean?  Self-guided walking holidays are the best way to discover the still-vibrant rural soul which infuses so many lesser-known areas of Europe, and to discover the beauty that arises from the harmony of man, history, culture and landscape. Our mission is to give you the freedom of discovery.

Our self-guided hiking tours cover most of southern and central Europe, including Italy, with its wealth of landscape, food and wine and culture.  Our walking vacations in Spain explore the north of the peninsula in great depth, while our self-guided France holidays concentrate on the sub-alpine south-east, including Provence.

The rest of Europe is by no means forgotten though – with three tours in England, three in Greece and two in Croatia as well as many other countries.  Check out all the options by using the drop down list above.

You will normally stay in small, family run accommodation and will fortify the inner man as the locals do – with home grown foods and the best local wines. And we carry your luggage, so that you can concentrate on the serious job of enjoying your holiday. Each of our routes is designed by a local, and has a goal – somewhere great to arrive at – and we have routes for all walking abilities and tastes. We love to talk to you too, so contact our office for the best and most personal service you will get from any walking holiday company.

A well thought walk following the coastline with stunning views . A mix of easy and quite demanding walking with some steep climbs and descents some days. Comfortable accommodation in small, welcoming hotels and albergues . Great local seafood and wine .

Excellent communication from start to finish . Detailed notes and maps for each day's walking with a very helpful local host to advise on matters such as possible taxi transfers, best local restaurants etc .

Fantastic holiday - an escape to the wonderful rugged coastline of Galicia. A beautiful walk over six days with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and miles of deserted trail and beaches to explore. Faultless arrangements and daily support. Great accommodation and a chance to meet some of the friendliest Spanish locals along the way. Local food (fish/shellfish) and wine was memorable for all the best reasons.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Expertise and friendly advice from day one. Arrangements, details and information was fool-proof. Local support was also first class. The "personal touch" shone through in every way.

This was a six day self-guided walking trip along scenic mountain paths, passing through picturesque medieval villages and finishing on the Mediterranean coast. We stayed mostly in comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation, with dinner and packed lunches usually provided by very welcoming hosts.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

This was our third walking trip with On Foot Holidays. They provided detailed and informative maps and route notes, booked all of the hand-picked accommodation and arranged the transfer of luggage each day. They went out of their way to ensure that the holiday was perfect. Most importantly, the route planning information was of a very high standard, so that our safety was assured at all times during the walk.

This was our third On Foot Holiday and it was the best yet. Everything was outstanding: the quality of the walking, the accommodation and the fantastic support from the kind and charming local taxi drivers and the wonderful Aznar, the local guide designer. We travelled as a family of three so On Foot was able to arrange single rooms for our daughter too. We were impressed by the spectacular scenery, so wild and undiscovered! This is a tremendous part of Spain for eating too and each accommodation stop provided delicious meals. Bravo On Foot!

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot are like old friends - so warm and informative at the booking stage and absolutely meticulous in all aspects of the planning process. They obviously choose all their partners in the field very carefully, so all the drivers, guides and hotel hosts are kindred On Foot spirits - equally warm and friendly with very high standards.

A self-guided walking holiday in the Priorat region of Spain. We undertook the five day route which was perfectly designed and characterised by great variety - monasteries, vineyards, cliff edges quaint villages and cosy and unique accommodation. Very picturesque and most days we were the only ones on the trail (we walked in July so potentially it was a case of mad dogs and Englishmen ....). Highlights were the spectacular scenery and a chance to really get off the beaten track, just an hour and a half from Barcelona. And lovely hosts.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot holidays provided great support - the map notes were terrific (including all the travel and accommodation notes) and made us completely self-sufficient, however there was also an on-the-ground rep who contacted us and was available in emergency. We are based in Australia but this caused no difficulties in booking or managing the holiday arrangements.

This was a self guided walking holiday along the Lighthouse Way in Galicia. We could not fault the arrangements right from booking to the end of the holiday. The walk was through beautiful countryside, mainly along the Coast, with carpets of wild flowers all the way.We walked across deserted beaches with white sand and enjoyed several bathes. The weather was mainly sunny and warm with very few people around. We stayed in characterful accommodation with delightful hosts and warm hospitality. We ate first rate fish and sea food washed down by local white wine wherever we went at very reasonable prices.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

As with other holidays with On Foot the arrangements were faultless. Everything worked well and we had all the information and maps we needed.

Everyone in the family (teenagers included!) agreed it was one of the best vacations we've ever had. We got lucky with the weather - seven days of perfect walking weather in England in June. No small feat. The walking route was a lovely combination of fields, moors, woods and small towns, and the beginning and end points were locations we could have spent a few extra days exploring. Every day we started with a huge breakfast, and then set out on our route for the day. It was an ideal vacation for us - surrounded by nature, active and challenging, but with a shower and fabulous pub meal awaiting us at the end. It was a luxury to focus on the countryside and our hiking, not the logistics of it all. We would do it again, and will.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Honestly, this was one of the best companies I've dealt with in a long time, and I don't say that lightly. They responded to my questions promptly, designed an outstanding route with shortening options, followed up with excellent trip materials (maps, directions, tourist attractions, history), offered advice and support for the trip, and solicited honest feedback afterwards. They PAID ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS. I find that rare these days, and it's critical to the success of a trip like this. I booked this trip with On Foot Holidays based on the personal recommendation of a friend who had used them before and still does. I would highly recommend On Foot Holidays, without caveat or reservation.

We had an excellent trip in the Lake District in Italy. It is tough to say what was the best part of the trip, the hikes on wonderful trails, the people we met, the fine dining or just traveling with friends.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

This was our second trip with On Foot Holidays, the first one was Amalfi Coast. Two very different hikes but we loved them both. I am a stickler on details, especially transportation, getting to and from the airport and the ferry schedule. On advise from On Foot we took a bus from San Sebastion, caught a plane from Bilbao to Milan, caught a bus to Lake Maggiore and a ferry to Isola de Pescatore with no hang ups! They are a well oiled machine, willing to help out in any way possible. I would highly recommend using On Foot Holidays.

We had a great time walking the Bohemia Paradise walk. The scenery was beautiful and varied, the trails were clearly marked and the history and sights were very informative. Each of the inns we stayed in were different and unique in their own way which added to the charm of the trip. The staff were very helpful in answering questions. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this part of the world. Looking forward to our next walking trip!! Hmmm, where to go . . . ?

We walked the Salt Route through the Ligurian Hills. We hardly saw a soul for a whole week on the route which followed old mule tracks, some very attractive ridges and through old forests. Some of the paths were the most attractive we've ever walked. The range of places we stayed varied considerably and gave a very interesting variety from high standard hotels to simple albergos.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot were a very friendly and responsive company to deal with. The route notes and maps were thorough and accurate and the support on the walk, although not needed in our case, was easily available.

We had 3 nights at the beautiful Bella Venezia Hotel in Corfu town and then transferred to the Greek mainland and travelled by bus and taxi to the mountainous Zagoria region. The walking or Corfu was good and Corfu town is a real gem and not to be missed but we just loved the unspoilt Zagori mountains. Great scenery, stunning Vikos gorge, good food, friendly people, pretty butterflies and wild flowers. Walking was fairly strenuous but rewarded by lovely countryside and amazing views.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

This was our third holiday with On Foot Holidays and they are excellent. Staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Their choice of accommodation is perfect. Each hotel or B&B was faultless - great locations, beautiful buildings, lovely rooms, good food and all run by people who want you to have a great time and go out of their way to provide help. All arrangements worked well, transfer and travel details were precise and accurate and explained exactly what to do, where to go and how much it would cost. Walking notes are very easy to follow and give you complete confidence you will find the way.

We walked from near Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, to Trieste in Italy over a period of 5 days, through changing scenery and wildflower meadows, taking in Predjama Castle, a gourmet dinner one evening, wine tasting one day en-route and one day visiting the Skocjan caves (all pre-arranged by On Foot). On Foot arrange a mix of hotels, B&Bs and farms to stay at, some providing dinners with their own home produced food and wine. We carry daypacks during the walks and On Foot arrange for our main luggage to be taken to the next place. We have never been disappointed (except for some iffy weather, which not even On Foot can control!) We are now thinking which of all the tempting routes available we should select for our fifth holiday with them.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot meticulously research each of their European holiday destinations; the walk itself, the local reps and the places you stay at. Really professional firm and nice people too. New routes are being added to their list of choices.

Walking holiday around and between two Northern Italian lakes from the old grand tour circuit. Beautiful scenery, comfortable hotels, and a great two-night stop on top of a hill with an incredible restaurant/guest house. The track feels well-worn (no sense of being remote or away from other tourists), but for good reason - it was a lovely walk, and the lakeside towns are long-time tourist areas.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

Everything went perfectly smoothly. All travel advice and route notes were excellent; everything as specified. We were treated well at all of our destinations, which speaks well of the tour organizer.

A group of eight mature ladies walked 142 km to Santiago over six days. We stayed in a variety of local hotels or farmhouses, all with ensuite rooms, within a short distance from the well-marked Camino to Santiago route. The additional information and local maps provided by the tour operator were clear and well used. Our hosts were all obliging, friendly and offered us different menus for breakfast and dinner. Unfortunately we used the facilities to dry clothing at the end of some days but one was helpful and mended a walking pole for us too.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

On Foot Holidays of Salisbury provided a friendly, professional and thoroughly-researched package for us and our needs. They were very happy for us to visit the office and discuss any concerns that we had; emails and phone calls were answered quickly and efficiently. The walking packs they provide are comprehensive and clear, giving detailed background information, guidance notes and the mobile number for the English-speaking local contact, who responded when needed.

We walked an unguided five day walk organised by On Foot Holidays. A steep and rugged climb up to a hilltop called Simon's Seat on the first day gave wonderful views of the landscape to follow. The walks then took us through a variety of landscapes; high moorland and low, lush vales often walking beside rivers and through fields of wild flowers and sheep. The highlight was climbing above Malham Tarn and then descending to Malham Cove on day four. Each night was spent in a carefully selected village on the route, staying in small but charming inns and hotels offering a variety of delicious food. We were blessed with glorious weather all week which added to the enjoyment of the walking and the views.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

The team at On Foot Holidays went out of their way to assist with arranging transport at each end of the walk. Their walking guide notes and maps were clear and easy to understand, such that we never felt in danger of becoming lost. On Foot's local back-up team were also keen to assist with phoned advice and recommendations the evening before we set off. The team were always friendly, the luggage arrangements smooth and the pre-booked accommodation always welcoming. We have completed 3 previous unguided walks with this Operator and continue to enjoy every part of the experience, from the planning to the actual walking.

We did a 10 day self guided walked from Montblanc to Porrera. This is a little visited area of Spain and we were almost alone on the trails in spectacular scenery. While more challenging that I expected, the weather was good, the wild flowers in bloom, and it was a wonderful holiday. We spent an extra day at the end to do some wine tasting at the excellent Cal Pla Cellar.

Rating for On Foot Holidays:

This is my second On Foot holiday and again I was very impressed by the level of support they gave us. Their selection of accommodation is also very good. I will certainly use them again.
