Suggested route pairings

Do you have enough free time for a long European trip, and want to make the most of our many glorious hiking routes? If so, we humbly suggest combining two (or more!) On Foot Holidays routes in one trip! Especially for those travelling to Europe from further afield, this will save on the air fares that would be needed for separate journeys, and of course reduce your carbon emissions.

To help you choose the ideal combination, we’ve come up with some suggested pairings, based largely on easy train transfers between routes.

Of course there are many more combinations than those suggested here, depending on how much time you have available and the kind of walking you prefer, so do contact us to talk through the options. So here are our suggested route pairings, with routes, estimated journey times and some suggested stopovers. Details may change seasonally or at weekends, holidays etc, and may be different for shorter versions of routes.

Alpes Maritimes

Alpes Maritimes / Ligurian Hills: 4 hrs by train from Menton to Voghera (change Ventimiglia).
Ligurian Hills / Alpes Maritimes: 6 hrs by train from Camogli to La Brigue (change Genoa and Ventimiglia).

Alpes Maritimes / Northern Provence: train from Menton to Nice (40 mins), then TGV to Avignon (3½ hrs, possibly change Marseille), and local train to Carpentras (30 mins), taxi (included) to Venasque.
Northern Provence / Alpes Maritimes: taxi (included) to Carpentras, local train to Avignon (30 mins), then TGV to Nice (3½ hrs, possibly change Marseille), and local train to La Brigue (2½ hrs, change Ventimiglia).

Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast / Cilento National Park: 1¾ hrs by Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Napoli Garibaldi, then next door to Napoli Centrale for direct train to Agropoli (total 3 hrs) and short walk or taxi to hotel.
Cilento National Park / Amalfi Coast: 30 mins by taxi to Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo (included), train to Salerno (1 hr), followed by short walk to port (30 mins) and ferry (35 mins) to Amalfi.

Amalfi Coast / Southern Tuscany: 1¾ hrs by Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Naples, then 5 hrs by train to Siena (change Florence).

Ligurian Hills / Southern Tuscany: 4½ hrs by train from Camogli to Siena (change Pisa and Empoli).

Southern Tuscany / Amalfi Coast: bus or local taxi (30 mins) to Chiusi station, then 5 hrs by train to Salerno (change Rome), followed by short walk to port (30 mins) and ferry (35 mins) to Amalfi.
Amalfi Coast / Southern Tuscany: 1¾ hrs by Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Naples, then 5 hrs by train to Siena (change Florence).

Southern Tuscany / Lake Garda: bus or local taxi (30 mins) to Chiusi station, then train to Rovereto (min 5 hrs, change Florence, Bologna, and possibly elsewhere), and taxi (included) to Pieve di Ledro (1 hr). Overnight stop in Florence is highly recommended.
