NEW video – walking in Hardy’s footsteps Back to News

Monday 09th December | Posted by On Foot Staff

The green hills of Dorset, known and loved by the English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, form the backdrop to many of his tales. The wind-swept cliffs, chalk downlands and rural villages are the ever present characters accompanying Tess, Bathsheba and Jude through their joys and sorrows.

On Foot Holidays’ self-guided walk in this English county begins at our home town of Salisbury, which appears as ‘Melchester’ in Jude the Obscure. Pass through pretty villages such as Evershot (Hardy’s ‘Evershed’), where he was known to enjoy a drink at the bar of The Acorn Inn. Stop at Mapperton House, which starred in the 2015 film of Far from the Madding Crowd, and reach journey’s end at the traditional seaside town of Lyme Regis.

This short film gives a taste of the Dorset hiking experience without leaving your armchair – take a look!

With thanks to Sebastian Drewett.
